I have never had the talent to make my own recipes when it comes to baking. It is truly a science, one that I never really got the hang of. The ingredients have to be added at a certain time, in a certain order, and for me it would be just too big of a loss if I messed up so I have yet to really experiment with baking my own recipes. I do a majority of baking from recipes that were handed down to me by either my aunt, or my mother, and from recipes from fellow bloggers on Pinterest or even from books (yes I still read books, I love the idea of sitting down with a cup of coffee and reading a book, even if it is a baking or cooking book).
Sugar cookies are one of the most basic of cookies, and believe me when you can use less than 5 ingredients to bake something, you have yourself a simple cookie as far as ingredients go. Although basic, they are not necessarily easy and I say this because recipes for them vary so much that if you don’t follow the directions to the T you are bound to end up with a pile of crumbling mush, or a bowl of rocks (both of which I have accomplished while attempting these “basic” cookies. Don’t even get me started on rolling them out, and getting the right thickness, because if the dough is no good you can kiss your cut out sugar cookies goodbye, oh and when I say “cut-out” not all sugar cookie recipes are meant to be cut out, some are drop cookies, and that is another thing to watch out for when trying to make sugar cookies.
The recipe that I have found that works the best out of all the ones I have tried, and is the easiest to work with is from “The Bearfoot Baker”, the link for the recipe can be found below. When I made the recipe, the only thing I didn’t do but I am going to try next time is roll the dough out on the boards before freezing (and as Lisa from The Bearfoot Baker suggested, the cutting mats really are great). I was truly impressed with these cookies. After my last attempt at sugar cookies, which was during my Christmas Cookie bakeathon (not really a thing, but involves me baking about 1,000 cookies to gift), I wanted to swear sugar cookies off for ever and band them from my kitchen but being the thick headed person that I am I couldn't allow myself to do that and thankfully I didn't.
The Ingredients include:
2 sticks (8 ounces) of unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups of granulated sugar
2 tsp of Pure Vanilla Extract
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
4 cups (17 ounces) of All-Purpose Flour
